Why Paver Joints Need Fresh Sand

The sand packed between your pavers isn’t just cosmetic — it’s structural. It holds each paver in position, spreads load, and keeps the field tight so nothing shifts underfoot or under tires. In Southwest Florida, that joint sand erodes fast: pressure washing, heavy rain, irrigation runoff, and everyday traffic wash it out, leaving open gaps.

Once the joints empty out, pavers start to rock and settle unevenly, weeds and ants move into the gaps, and standing water works its way under the field. Paver re-sanding refills those joints with fresh Trident joint sand, re-locks the field, and restores a clean, uniform look — and it’s the required first step before any paver seal. Below are our standalone re-sanding options; if you’re also sealing, the joint-sand top-off is already included in our paver sealing price.

Budgeted at roughly 3 × 50 lb bags per 1,000 sq ft at the top-off rate. Heavy washout or deep joints use more sand and may price as a full restoration.

ICPI guidance treats full, properly-compacted joints as essential to interlock, the mechanism that lets a paver field share load and resist movement. We follow that principle on every job: clean the joints, refill to the proper depth with Trident sand, and compact so the field locks back together the way it was engineered to — not just a quick surface dusting that washes out in the next storm.
